I have a 2000 Ford Escort ZX2 with a 2.2 liter 4 cylinder motor with Dual Overhead Cams, which is all stock. It has 95,000 miles on it, and ran excellent till recently when it won't stay idle. When the motor is cool, it'll run till it warms up, then stalls. It's a 5 speed, and when driving it, as soon as you let go of the gas, it'll stall unless you downshift, and keep the gas to it. It's aggrivating, so does anyone have an idea of what it may be. By the way, oil is clean, timing chain, belts been replaced, and new spark plugs too. Please help!

I'd bet the farm you haven't taken it in for the recall...or at least my 2000 escort gl with the same engine did the same thing. Apparently there is a vacuum hose on the engine that was defective and it splits from the engine heat. When cold it stays closed a bit but the warmer it gets the warmer the hose gets, thus letting the hole open wider and cause a vacuum loss to the engine. It drove us nuts and then we got the letter for the recall and took it to Ford where they fixed it free. Call your dealer about it and make sure they won't fix it for free. Mine had 100K on it when we had it fixed and they didn't care about the mileage at all. I also have a 98 which is the same exact car with 240,000 miles on it and has never had a screw turned other than a replacement of a catalytic converter. I bought it from a buddy who bought it new for parts for mine when I hit a deer and totalled mine. They were the same color so I just took parts from his and put on mine. At 240 K his had a rod start knocking badly. My mechanic while changing parts unbolted the catalytic converter which was bought at Advance Auto Parts and the knock left the engine. It runs perfect to this day. I junked the car over another defective Advance part. Anyway, these engines are amazing, nothing like the old Escorts. They were junk. If you keep your oil changed and trans fluid there is no reason you shouldn't get 300K miles out of it without major trouble. Mine now has 140K and still has the original plugs, wires, timing belt, and everything else but the vacuum hose on it. It's never even had the tranny fluid changed.

Sounds like the air intake has a leak causing lean to the point of stalling out the engine. Buy carburetor cleaner spray can put the nozzle on the sprayer and have some one keep the throttle and try to run the engine as slow as you can. Spray the rubber boot from the air filter to the throttle spray the tubes around the valve cover and the intake manifold to cylinder head gasket. I am not sure that 2.2 uses an airflow meter or map sensor either way when you locate a leak the engine will smooth out and act kind of normal until the carb spray sucks in and the engine leans out again. Warning flammable use only outside have garden hose or fire extinguisher handy. Locate the cause of lean running and repair replace parts gaskets ect.

It sound like u need a new air flow sensor chip. What it does is keep the car idle. Without it u will always have 2 give the car gas 2 keep it on. It also could be unplugged so check by the air intake and if u see a cord is just hanging.

To me it sounds more like the ignition module is getting too hot, and shorting out, or it can be that infamous Ford part called the IAC, or idle air control. Like another person answered, does your check engine light cme on? Mean only when the engine is running, not stalled or when you start it up.

properly, i recognize men which have placed 4.6 32v Cobra automobiles into Rangers. i recognize that the 5.4 is taller than a 4.6 yet no longer too a lot wider. Will it more effective wholesome? constructive. Is it properly worth it? no longer for my area. you opt to rewire the entire motor vehicle because of the overhead cam motor, elements fee more effective, and think ofyou've got to make your human being mounts to make it more effective wholesome. i recognize a guy that has a 5.4 in a Mustang. It made crappy HP and complete shitload of torque and it grow to be difficulty after difficulty. you ought to comprehend that once you bypass down that course, you ought to anticipate complications.
