Never to old. There are a variety of different settings that a psychologist can practice in, someone with limited mobility, perhaps from old age, could be comfortable in, Lots of employers, and lots of charities[who need volunteers] would be happy to find a place for an older psychologist.
One needs a good thinking mind, the ability to communicate, an education, and some empathy.
Good luck, and sorry, I do not know the average age.

You are never to old to start a new career professionally or personnally. However, if you are a 70 year old Psychologist starting your own practice, make sure you are not displaying you Academic Achievements on the walls. It would give someone the impression, that it took you 50 years to learn the subject. Good Luck!

its never too old to be a psychologist - maybe a 90 would be too old.
the reasons:
1. if you are baby boomer age and older - you'll understand what your clients would be going through and you'll also know what them youngins are just experiencing. And look old enough to know what one is doing as a psychologist.. many people judge the book by its cover. With age comes wisdom, with wisdom comes knowledge and history. With age also, one can deceive a client in some sense to think that one has many years of experience as well in the field. The schooling part may be harder memory wise, but its not impossible, you just got to find ways for your memory to click - maybe the use of somatics..along with mnemonics.
2. if you are gen x, there's still time to get that degree, breeze through the general ed crap. and as Gen X - one still can change career paths, learn, and earn. Not too much difference than Baby Boomers, also, old enough to look experienced.
3. gen y, just starting.. just learning. can be a great psychologist - but building clientele may take more time..

It's never too old. Who cares what the average age of a psychologist is! If you want to try to be one, go for it.

Sure, everyone wants to say "never," but obviously that's just sugar coat talk.
Obtaining a Ph.D. in Psychology can take about 10 years including your undergraduate work. Once you finish, you need to build up a name by doing internship and probono work; this usually pays very poorly. If you've reached an older age and have responsibilities, it may be best to re-evaluate how much it's worth.

I don't know how old you are, but I think you would be looking at 8 to 10 years of school for a degree...I say go for it, though, no matter how old you are.

If you have to ask you are probably too old. You will never recoup the cost of your education and will retire in debt. That is common sense, not psycholgy

I would say anything less than 10 years from the end of your life.
Being that it will take that long to become one...
Why feel like you shouldn't do what you want to?
If that is your interest then do it...
:o)
