why are clouds dark during a storm?

actually as a cloud gets darker that means there is more water (nuclies) growing/forming in the cloud, so as there is more rain, its harder for light to pass through making the cloud appear darker because there is less ligth getting to (usually the bottom) of the cloud.
the clouds are white because all of the sunlight is being absorbed. =)

As the clouds become bigger or thicker, light will not be able to penetrate the cloud as easy.
Also as the cloud goes overhead, it will be darker, the storm cloud is a column of water vapour, and is thicker vertically
But if the cloud is at a distance, it will appear lighter, as the light, does not travel through the thicker part.

In fact, water particles are somehow transparent. however, because of water particles' slight opacity, this increases its total opacity of the cloud so that the part of the sun light is blocked, and it looks dark.
