This is really almost too open of a decision for you to make without spending time to really think about it. The assignment reminds me of Native American legends. I have my 3rd grade students write a legend but I give them the phenomenon and we brainstorm ideas together. It takes my kids about a week to write. Some stories I have read about have been...why the rabbit has a short tail, why the skunk has a stripe, why the moon has phases. You can get really creative with these and have animals talking, plants talking, etc. If you get stuck, google or do a yahoo search for Native American legends. DO NOT copy one off the web, because I'm sure your teacher will have a clue that you did it.

I agree with the northern lights idea. One legend about the northern lights in the north is that you must never whistle while the northern lights are visible because if you do, you are "whistling them down", and this is a very dangerous thing to do.

Another possibility might be something about the Bermuda Triangle and the Sargasso Sea.

Fog is also a good one ... it can feel very spooky and mysterious.

Another suggestion to write about mirages .... could be interesting.

Good luck with it.

the northern lights
an earthquake
a flood
a volcanic eruption
an eclipse
Then think of a story where the event might have been caused by something besides nature. Think of Paul Bunyan or Pecos Bill, these are legends.

How about lightning? Ball lightning would be really cool to make up a legend about.
