If that's the worst thing about your boyfriend then I would suggest you hang on to him at any cost! There are many things worse than that in this world and when I look at the menu at a restaurant I sometimes am totally astonished at the description given to a meal which is nothing more than plain "fish & chips" Why don't you do the ordering as its sociably acceptable in this day and age and spare your boyfriend of further embarrasment!

Just joke around and then ask him what sounds good. Then ask him to point to you what it is he wants on the menu and you'll order it for him or in the meantime you could try to teach him how to say it so if he ever goes somewhere like that by himself or with friends he'll know how to say it. Honestly, I wouldn't be too concerned about the pronunciation problem though.

uh... can YOU pronounce the items on a menu? If so, help him out!

I frequently go to ethnic resteraunts where I can't pronounce the menu items. I can't read Chinese. My French and Italian pronunciation is poor. I'm a world traveler and consider myself a cosmopolitan kind of guy. There is no shame in ignorance, only aversion of learning.

If he seems embarrassed by being illiterate, try to help him learn to read. If he doesn't want to learn to read, then you will have to avoid situations where he is put on the spot or read the menu to him.
I'd think leaving might be an option. Don't block yourself into a box that limits your life.

literacy: practice saying menu items before you go so he won't be intimidated. mexican dishes are easy if you say the slowly. chinese dishes a bit trickier. you might try having him simply point at the menu items he'd like. if you're both comfortable with it, you could order for the two of you.

there ARE solutions. don't let this get in the way of what should be a fun evening together. good luck!

English is taught phonetically. That means you sound out each syllable in the dialect or accent of your region or country. Therefore any way it is spoken should be OK. People here say matt ress for mattress. Funniest thing I ever heard, but that is their way and it is OK by me.

He's obviously not a brain. Get used to trailer living. With your six kids. Always broke. Yeah, why leave?
