Gaging from how many people are constantly begging and pleading for free Runescape accounts on this site I'd say Runescape's the winner. I've never played either but Maplestory sounds like what you tell to your pancakes in the morning before you eat them :)

I don't know much about maplestory but runescape V2 just looks really annoying. try their official sites and find out for yourself.
and Oatmeal rasin, yes you do need a download... for V2 because the first version is not available anymore.
