The U.S. has the best tap water in the world. In fact, aside from Canada, we have the safest and best tasting tap water...because other countries in the Eastern hemisphere have had centuries to pollute their water tables. The "new" world in the Western hemisphere made us better stewards of our water supply.
We also have the most undeveloped, natural forests in the world. Thank god, foreign countries drill for and supply oil to us. America, the beautiful! We even ship old computers and scraps to poor, foreign countries so that we don't have to process or bury the toxic materials.
Bottled spring water costs the same as bottled soda. In NYC, $1.50 on the average.

To get a little serious in response to a rather dumb question...foreign visitors to the US actually do get sick from our tap water. This is true for virtually all travelers going to almost any foreign country. It's basically because every locale has it's own brew of beasties and microbes that naturally live in the water supply. Your body quickly adapts to the place you live so the water doesn't make you sick...but when you go someplace new, it's a whole new brew so it takes time for your body to adjust....and that adjustment time can be quite unpleasant.
We Americans are nearly ubiquitous in advice to visitors to Mexico..."Don't drink the water!" But Mexicans drink the water and doesn't make them sick. However, those same Mexicans can get sick when they come to the US and drink the water here. Ironic, eh?

The tap water is just fine to drink. Each city processes its own water, so it tastes a little different from one city to the next. If you don't like the taste you can either install a filtration system in your home or buy bottled water, but the tap water is perfectly safe.

some people are too good for it " I only wash my hair in evian". others are too picky or paranoid about their local water's taste and content.
bottled water costs around .75-1.25 ,the same as a soft drink that has many more tastey ingredients.
some companies actually bottle city municipal water, put a fancy name on it and people love it.(read the label)
evian backwards is naive, wonder if thats an accident
