It looks like a bee with a rust and yellow colors in the body. It does not look like a cicada killer wasp, but like a huge, mutant bee. It's about 2-3'' long and has a loud buzz that accompanies it. I have planter boxes on my deck filled with flowers and it flies around them during the day. If anyone can help, that would be great, it's driving me crazy.

My guess is that it's a carpenter bee, but I have never seen them 2-3" long before. They're harmless, except that they burrow holes in wooden posts and large beams to make their nests. If they do sting, I think you'd have to really try to get stung. When I was little, I used to knock them out of the air with twigs. It was fun at the time, but now that I think of it that was kind of cruel. I have no idea if they can cause significant structural damage, because they made their nests in our barn and we didn't care to exterminate them. If you want to see a picture of them, you can look here: http://whatsthatbug.com/carpenter.html The ones we have around here are black and yellow and about an inch long at the longest. Maybe someone can tell you if they can cause structural damage, but if they infest a shed or a garage, I wouldn't worry about them. They do not make hives like regular bees either. I hope that's what you needed to know! Good luck!

Oh, yeah . . . one other thing: If you do have carpenter bees, you will see their nests and probably see them flying in and out of the holes they burrow. I have never seen them far away from their nests (not that I was looking for them far away from their nests either, but still :-) Try following one of them around and see if it goes into a hole. Have a good night!
