if you put a line on top and bottom of the 1 and made it into a 2 it would be correct, because IX is roman numeral for 11. (X means 10, V means 5)

well, if it's alegebra, each X is supposed to represent a 6, and the one is not necessary.
if it's roman numerals, and you need two more numbers, you need two negative IIIs, so IX + IX -III - III = XII
