it just sits there doing nothing.. is it dead???

Maybe, and maybe not yet.

Mayfly spend most of their lifetime as larvae in water. Once they trun into adult, they live only a few days, some spieces only a few hours. They lack a proper digestive system, so as adult cannot even eat. So all they do as adult is find a mate, lay eggs and die.

The one you see doing nothing may have already mated and is waiting to die, or is waiting to smell the presence of a member of the opposite sex.

Well... it's a mayfly ... not a mustfly or a canfly or even a shouldfly.

It may fly or it may not.

no, it's not necessarily dead....but if you could just sit there all day and do nothing, wouldn't you?
