This is a rather general question, but let me try to answer it. Each programming language has its own strengths and weaknesses. The attached link attempts to classify languages by common uses and themes.

On a side note, most modern programming languages are very adaptable to a variety of tasks. Visual Basic or Python are good starting languages. C is powerful, but some people have a bit of a learning curve with it. Whatever your choice, you'll soon find that many of the concepts are the same with only differences in syntax (the way you enter commands).

Good luck!

There are SO MANY languages and each has its strong points for specific purposes. You would need to state what purpose you want to accomplish before beginnig to answer this question or the answer would be encyclopedic.

The purposes couldbe anything from making the most money, the easiest, best with strings, fastest etc.

The 'C' language can do anything and most other languages are written in 'C' but for some simple purposes, you could save a LOT of time with another language.

Go to http://www.tiobe.com/tpci.htm for a good start.

Well, that's the thing, depending on what you want to do with the language, depends on what you use.
RPG is of course Report Processing, COBOL is Common Business Oriented Language... and VB for programming games, etc..
You'd have to do some research for yourself in Google, and in Yahoo, or whichever.

Here is a technical comparison of programming languages http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_programming_languages. It does not compare them based on the applicability. You can start here and browse the links at the bottom of the article to learn more.

Java is good for all things, computers are so fast they can handle running the JVM and still have plenty left over. It's powerful, object oriented and will do just about anything you want it to do.

as many people said, there are many languages.

there a few you should stay away from.
any basic (vb et al) will rot your brain.
COBOL will hurt your fingers.
Fortran will assist you in writing un-readable code.

C,Java,Javascript,Pascal,Algol will put you on the road to sanity, But with most versions of C, you can be sidetracked!
