At 15 1/2 you can get a permit by passing a written test at DMV and providing proof of insurance. You may not ride double or after dark. At 16 when you get your ndrivers licence, you can also get your motorcycle licence. This test is riding. If your a decent rider it is easy. You will have to ride around a circle in both directions, maybe do a figure 8 or go around some cones., stop on a line easy stuff like that. When you hit the streets " always remember " cars and trucks never see you and are out to kill you. If you ride with this in mind you stand a grater chance of survival.

take good old dad or mom along get a new helmet that is yours alone. Full face Snell foundation approved good boots and long pants. Then learn the art of low speed handling the saftey class teaches you. It really saves clutch levers and turnsignals when you drop the bike not knowing bikes can to drive slow too! Contact the motorcycle dealers in your area for details times ages and dates.

For the actual motorcycle safety course, they require:
-over the ankle boots
-some kind of gloves (like mechanic's gloves)
-sunglasses
-pants (vs shorts)
-long sleeve shirt/jacket
They will usually provide a motorcycle and helmet. If you want to wear your own helmet you can. If it is a full face helmet, you have to keep the visor at nose level or below.
Some basic motorcycle riding knowledge is helpful. You can find some basics at http://www.motorcyclegiftshop.com/motorcycle_riding.html

Several recommendations
1. Take the MSF class! You should check their website to see what the rewuirements are in your state. (they vary a great deal) If you have to wait to take it, then wait. It is very important that you build the skills taught in the class.
2. Check out this guide to the MSF - I bought it and I passed the class with flying colors www.cyclebasics.com
3. Buy the best gear that you can and ride safely. It is a totally differnt world on a bike and if you dont ride cautiously, then the outcome could be fatal
4. Again, take the MSF class

Jump for joy and do something nice for your parents. I sure would like to have gotten a motorcycle for a birthday present. I had to earn money and buy mine with after school jobs and a massive 3 neighborhood paper-route. Lucky you.

Well if you don't have any experience on a bike you need to have your parent's head examined!! To take the safety riders course all you need is a temporary permit and the ability to ride a bicycle as the people offering the course have motorbikes for you to practice on
