I'm planning on converting my old fretted 4 string bass, into a fretless. I've been doing a lot of research and don't know whether I should do a varnish finish or a wood epoxy finish. Which would you recommend? Links would help, thank you.

Varnish would be my choice, It allows the quality of the wood to come through in the sound of the bass. Epoxy is a "plastic" and that sound comes through when you play.

well first of all....when taking frets out of a fretted bass....the frets sometimes will crack the fretboard.while removing them. plus with the curvature of a fretted bass and a fretless bass is different.....u will also have to do alot of adjustments to the bridge and pickups. the freeted bass fretboard is not as curved as a fretless.............a fretless allows all the differnt tones and ranges to sing..where a fretted bass stops most tones but the main note to ring........................good luck..there is a book out there called "guitar repair guide" and " how to make your own electric guitar and bass"...............

Just an Opinion here...go with the Varnish look, it makes it look a little richer...Happy Playing
