The word kangaroo derives from the Guugu Yimidhirr (an Australian Aboriginal language) word gangurru, referring to a grey kangaroo. The name was first recorded (as "Kangooroo or Kanguru")

I saw a re-run of an American 70's show the other week, Heart to Heart and the characters were saying that Kangaroo comes from the Aboriginal word for 'what was that?' which is what the first person to see a kangaroo said. Imagine if all our animals were named like that... koalas would be called 'Awww so cute' and big venomous snakes would be called 'Sh*t!!!'
