You must have the program set to automatically download and install updates. This is the best way to make sure that your virus definitions are always up to date.
The part I don't understand is about you having to restart your computer. McAfee almost never asks me to restart my computer. It did ask me to do it earlier today, but I had had to re-install the McAfee Firewall, so the restart was expected. However, I just kept telling it to restart later until I was ready to do so.
The fact that you are new to McAfee shouldn't have anything to do with it unless you have some settings that are wrong. It's hard for me to remember from when I was new. My sister had had McAfee awhile before I got my computer, so she was able to help me with it.
Any security program has the potential to slow things down. I figure that it's the price to pay if I want to keep my computer safe. If I find myself getting too frustrated while one of the programs updates itself, I leave my desk and go do something else.

McAfee has a feature where it automatically downloads and installs the latest updates.
You can change how this operates by doing the following:
- Open up your McAfee program
- Click on "Updates"
- Click on "Configure"
- Choose the "Notify me before downloading any updates" option, and click OK.
You can turn it off by selecting the "Disable automatic updating", but remember to check for udpates yourself periodically if you do this.
(Exact steps may vary depending on what version of McAfee you have)

McAfee basically is cr** software.
I would recommend that you uninstall it, and download and install AVG Antivirus from Grisoft.
AVG is better software - it is highly effective, and unobtrustive (thus, not annoying) and, it's FREE!
