Samsung CD Rom SC-148 is a CD Rom, not a DVD Rom as is your Sony CD R/W Drive, although you can burn CD’s on the Sony Drive, it doesn’t play DVD’s. A DVD Rom will run you about thirty dollars, and I would suggest you replace the Samsung CD Rom with one, that way you can still burn CD’s on the Sony drive. Installing the drive is easy. Check the one jumper on the back of the Samsung Drive and see if it is set for Master, Slave, or Cable Select, and set the jumper the same for the DVD Rom, then connect the flat cable and you’re all set. The drive will come with software, and be sure to load the software disk in the DVD Rom for installing so it will address the right drive. New versions of Windows Media Player will also play DVD’s but the program that comes with the drive will generally allow more features.
Device Manager has generic references to indicate all optical drives.

You might try double-checking that your optical drive is, in fact, a DVD drive. If it will not read or play any DVDs, then it might well be only a CD drive.

Take a close look at the front of the drive. It will have words and labels stamped into the plastic. Read to see if it is a DVD or just a CD.

OK i read all the answers you got thus far. i have a Combo drive. Which will play DVDs and burn CDs however i can't play the DVDs due to the processor in this machine. if you have a DVD player and the soft wear too you may have the same problem as i.

are u sure its dvd player? or maybe its cd player,
if it is dvd player have you install the dvd drive software?
or maybe your dvd is working but it cant open the files on the dvd because of the file type content on the dvd.
or
you can check your dvd drive of it is listed on device manager.
right click on My Computer>properties>hardware>device manager, then look your dvd device in the list. If its not listed try to check the connections on your dvd drive.

most (older--1 year) computers don't have a DVD drive...this does not come standard from most stores.(well it may now, but only recently)---You need one...just cause the disk fits it the CD slot doesn't mean you are set up for DVD's

It requires a DVD player in your PC and DVD software to play it. One or both of these is probably missing
