would you ever call someone tell them that you are glad you met it just wasn't a connection for you, or would that be harsh? (this is really the core of my querry )

I've met heaps of people online. Some of my best friends are people I met on the net.
I met the love of my life online too. I'm a pretty lucky guy.
I've never really had the need to say "Sorry - there was no connection" to anyone I've met through the www tthough. Sorry - can't help ya on that one.

I met a guy online who lived quite close to me, and it was quite coincedental because he was one of my real-life friends' ex-boyfriends, so I knew he was who he said he was.

We later became a couple and broke up after 6 months because he kept accusing me of hating him (yes, strange) and accusing me of cheating on him (which is just insulting). Plus I found out my friend broke up with him because he physically hurt her and she wound up in hospital.

I was glad I met him because it was a good relationship while it lasted, but I'd rather not do something like that again.
