Sex and violence are more strongly connected than most people realize. That's because, for a well adjusted person with a conscience, there is a clear line set between the two.

We often hear about the human brain having a left and right hemisphere. Less talked about though, is that there are three layers to the brain.

The first brain to develop was the "reptilian" brain. It is at the very core and is in charge of survival and automatic responses (respiration, automated body functions such as blinking eys, self-defense, sex). It's the "fight or flight" part of our brain.

Next is the limbic brain or "emotional" brain. This is the brain that allows us to make emotional bonds with family and friends. It helps us create social networks.

Last is the cerebral brain, or "thinking" brain. It is in charge of "higher functions" such as reading, writing, problem solving, future planning. It contemplates what our baser reptilian and emotional brains experience.

For someone who is well-adjusted (i.e. connected to and in control of their emotions), and who has a conscience (i.e. thinks ahead/ contemplates life) sex and violence do not tend to overlap too much.

However, the connections between the three brains are tenuous at best. When someone gets drunk, for example, the "thinking" brain can turn off. That's why some people get really talkative about their emotions, while others try to find someone to have sex with and others look to fight.

When the lower brain, or "reptilian" brain is left in charge, you will find high degrees of violence or sexuality. Usually they are separated or compartimentalized by the "emotional" brain (i.e. you have sex with those you like and you beat up people you don't like). For some people, however, there is no connection to the emotional brain or thinking brain. For them, the boundaries between sex and violence are virtually non-existent.

If you doubt this, keep in mind that the greatest clients of prostitutes throughout history are soldiers (violence literally gives them hard-ons). And S&M is no coincidence. If sex and violence were not connected there would be no such thing as S&M.

I don't condemn porn ;-), but I do believe that in the hands of twisted people it can lead to violence. I believe that porn does not equal violence, but it can lead to it (especially in emotionally dead men without partners).

Were you just watching the Channel 4 programme about the killer Ted Bundy? It addressed the very question you've asked. Porn only ever made me horny. There are some sick people who would get fired up by it, but anything would make those whackos pop their corks!

Anyone that would use pornography or violent films as an excuse for their behaviour is lying through their teeth. You can watch all the violence and porn you want, you still know right from wrong when it's over. You're not absolved of your responsibility to abide by the law and respect others just because you watched porn or action movies.

No porn should not make anybody aggressive at least not the tasteful kind involving all willing people over 18 that are taking part or somehow involved. Porn is about nudity and sex and fantasies for both men and women, its not about violence or aggression. People, the majority being men in this case take a interest in porn because they are probably very sexual people, they like the female body and take pleasure in satisfying their needs and human nature by watching or reading films and magazines about sex. This can be damaging to relationships if the other person can not come to terms with the situation, but it is self satisfying for those single men and women who would love to have a sexual partner.
Porn of the under 18 kind is obviously wrong and immoral, and not tasteful. It is also illegal and is a criminal offence - this is the case where violence and aggression may come into it - but porn should not be blamed or found as the cause - the cause is the actual person themselves and the state of their mind.

Ted bundy just thought that he may get his execution put back as by saying that, he thought it may qualify him for therapy. But I would say that some people have certain dormant tendancies that normaly wouldn't manifest. They don't manifest because of our sense of right and wrong, reality and fantasy, and most people can tell the difference. But SOME people can't. They think that what they see on the screen is real. That's a harmless form of delusion if it's something like coronation street they like to watch..........but if that same delusional type person gets into a sick, violent, degrading type of porn, like sadism or rape porn........................then they become dangerous. Why? because they are getting off on those type of films, there will come a stage where it starts to creep into their real world. The reason is that the images and emotions and excitement are being placed into the subconcious mind. And they WILL resurface.
But non violent, erotica, normal sexual activity type porn can be a good thing.........especially if some couples who have been together for a long time and are getting a bit bored watch it. It ALL depends on the TYPE of porn. If you wouldn't want your mates to know you were watching it, or your partner......it's the wrong kind.

Porn does not make me violent. Porn does not make me aggressive. Ted Bundy never met me - I don't know why he would think that porn would make me violent or agressive.

No, but it can make you ignorant - theory here being, well...how many women do you know who honestly orgasm from the mere touch from a man? Mainstream porn is a lot of very bad things, does more harm to peoples [men's and women's] sex lives than good, although most people fail to see this, but violent and aggressive it does not...unless like me you like things a bit rough when you're horny ;o)

Porn can only mean one thing.....You just think that it can make you violent or aggressive because you have corrupted your mind with evilish things. Porn can only harm you from a relationship if you are in one and it can hurt others if they find out you are looking at it once in a relationship. Porn is only made for singles like us that are not in a relationship and are for only those who continue to strive in their single daily lives. So as you can see here, Porn is nothing to mankind and can only lead to self doubt.

No it can't if normal... ie no kids, realisitic violence (ie getting spankies don't dount), animals... etc...

Porn is about sex, sex is about fun and affection.

Ted Bundy was nasty to start with...

if this was true ALL guys would mistreat women as all guys have seen porn...

The reality is if most guys met porn stars they would be shy or treat them the same way young teen girls treat male pop stars.. or make friends with them
