One tactic is to bring the situation up in a joking manner before someone else does; people generally don't like to tell the same joke twice, and your ability to laugh at yourself only makes you appear more confident. Realize also that people are largely too busy hoping they don't make some kind of a "goof" to worry for long about what's going on with you. It'll pass, someone else will have an embarrassing moment, and then it'll be their turn for awhile...until the next person after that comes along. It's just life, and it was your turn. Good luck.

The above answer from Tonalc1 is correct. And have you ever noticed that with celebrities or politicians who get into the same embarassing predicaments, that if they ignore it and act as if it's trivial, etc, that in time the whole matter fades in people's memories. The event effecting you today will be replaced a hundred times over by new events that affect others, and those events will replace the impact of memory of your event. Just be patient.

It is only remembered by others until someone else does something embarrassing again. Don't worry about it, everyone makes mistakes and the person with the laughs last, laughs best. Your turn will come to laugh at those who laughed at you.

Been there, done that! The first time with your friends after 'the moment', your all serious, snide remarks, wispering, chuckles. Two weeks later, your joking about it. Six months later, no one really cares. A year later, one of your friends has, 'a moment'. Now it's his turn.
