The mind is material and in that sense is matter, but it is not gross matter that is perceivable by touch, hearing, seeing, tasting, or smelling. This is subtle matter. We have two coverings of material energy -- the gross and subtle. The gross covering is the body made of water, earth, fire, etc. and the subtle covering is the mind, intelligence and ego.
Underneath both coverings is the pure spirit soul -- our real nature.
