I did as a matter of fact.. I had an ultrasound to tell me that my daughter was a boy... she had been born a girl.. The reason this mistake could have been made was that the ultrasound showed the umbilical cord balled up between her legs and was mistaken as the you know what...

If you really do know people that have had this happen to them within the past few years - I would strongly suggest asking them where they went, who their tech was...and then not go there.
I have so far given birth to 5 children. I had a good tech, with good equipment. No one has ever "guessed" my childrens' gender, let alone guessed wrong.
A penis cannot be mistaken for something else. And, when a girl is identified - the tech will outrightly say something like "see the lips..." Not trying to be profane, but my point is that when a gender is fully visible, there's no mistake. And a good tech will point it out, and fully show it to the parents.
And now, with the new 3D/4D ultrasounds, there is definitely no mistake!
If a tech is guessing, it means that they did not, and can not get a good view of the gender. Then, they will guess - usually by heartbeat which is more often wrong than not.

Lol, I know a couple that were told they were having a boy from the ultrasound (this was several years ago) and ended up having twins. One was appearently right under the other so they couldn't see it. I guess you never know.

That just happened to my best friend. She was expecting a girl but had a boy...But she was super excited, because she already had a girl. So she was thrilled to have one of each.
