right now i have the cheap walmart one and it takes alot of water just to clean a small portion of the tank (29 gallon)

Using a Python "no Spill" device, you can clean the gravel bed and do a water change at the same time. It includes a long hose and fitting that connects to a sink faucet. Dirty water is exchanged rather than removed, so you work at your own pace.

There are also other brands that copied this technology, but Python was the original. you can find them at most good pet and aquarium dealers.

I find that all the gravel vacuum/siphon attachments are useless and you should just stick with the tubing, using it just the same. If you don't have the tube already, it costs about a buck fifty at your nearest pet supply shop.
