We study it because , imagine if we were all ignorannt of our government. We wouldn't know our rights, and if we were put in jail they could do what ever they wanted to us! because we wouldnt know what is right or wrong.
Also studying Government gets people to shake up the government, and let people run it!!!
basically the more you know the more power you have.

to learn that you can have democracy/good or you can have fascism/evil - unjust concentration of wealth/power in the hands of a few
the state built on injustice cannot stand
we have fortnightly pay from $1 billion to $1 - from a million times to 1000th of average pay
ie, we cannot stand, unless the people, who are always strongest, stand up for democracy, goodness, justice, equality, liberty, peace, happiness by limiting fortunes to the just maximum [US$2 million, 2006 dollars] and spreading of the unjust [ie stolen, legally or illegally] overfortunes equally among all - an extra US$70,000 per family per year
1% steal US$70 trillion a year

Do the still teach government in school? I haven't seen mush evidence. coragryph has the best answer I see. If we are supposed to have government 'by the people', the people should know how it works.

Well, since it's supposed to be a government for the people, of the people, and by the people -- so it might be a good idea for the people to have some vague idea how it works.

because some people want to learn about a countries government and become involved in it and know better about it if they have problems with that government or they just don't know anything and they want to know

To take up time and fill students minds with the mostly fictional view of what our government is supposed to be but isn't.
