There actually wasn't a joke. Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees said in an interview that the song (I Started a Joke) doesn't have a meaning or reason, they were "just words that popped into his head" while he was on an airplane.

Some folks will argue that the song is about alienating other people or religion, but the writer of the song should be the ultimate source as to the true meaning - in this case, there is none.

Lyrics:

I started a joke
That started the whole world crying
But I didn't see
That the joke was on me

I started to cry
That started the whole world laughing
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

I looked at the sky
Running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed
Hurting my head from things that I'd said

'Till I finally died
That started the whole world living
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

I looked at the sky
Running my hands over my eyes
And I fell out of bed
Hurting my head from things that I'd said

'Till I finally died
That started the whole world living
Oh, if I'd only seen
That the joke was on me

It was from the gay guy from the Bee Gees. Not the gay guy with the blue covette.
