That a small independent record label (with no $) has signed them and put out the record, as opposed to a big deal label like Warner/Sony/Universal Music Group. (with $$$$) Obviously the big companies have more clout in getting their songs out there - indie stuff happens locally, via word of mouth and college radio.
Indie labels are usually just a few people operating out of their house or sometimes musicians start their own labels, like Ani Di Franco
Acts try to stay independent as they have more creative control, but the money isn't really there, so the whole "sell out" tag is ridiculous. If a band is good, usually they will go from an indie to a major label. That's how it's always been. People need to eat.
Then the big boys usually cherry pick the indies of their good acts. One of the well known indies is/was Sub pop out of the Seattle area, on the East Coast Matador was big for awhile.

Indie is short for Independent.
So they released an album they produced themselves without a major record company to back them financially or otherwise.

Indie is short for independent or independent label as opposed to a major label. Independent labels are small local publishers and studios while major labels are huge corporations in L.A. New York, Nashville, etc...

no longer precisely. it initially meant that, yet now its reffered to as sub variety of selection. Its extensively utilized as a be conscious to decribe issues as non-mainstream. It doesnt in basic terms stick to to unsigned bands/ ind. labels via fact, case in point, jay z began his very own autonomous label and is ridiculously renowned and prefer noone considers him indie. Indie rock began out with modest mouse and outfitted to spill interior the '90s and now has developed into maximum of categories of issues. theyres even some indie hiphop (tribe called quest, mos def) and indie electro (justice, MSTRKRFT).

It means they haven't signed with a big label yet. Like Greenday before they got a contract with Reprise (Warner) they were on the Lookout Records label. A lot of people accused them of selling out after they got a contract with a big label. It really means THEY MADE IT BIG.
