I think the cats are attracted to the fishy smell of the fish food. I've never had a cat eat the fish food, nor a dog. But I'm sure they would have tried of I left it out where they could get to it. Prolly won't hurt them a bit!

Our cats really enjoy eating tropical fish food and the plecos algae wafers, but they will only eat the most expensive ones if we buy cheaper brands they leave it alone, i think this is because cheaper ones contain less fish

Yes, I've seen cats go nuts for the stuff - the smell seems to get them excited, and by the smell I'm guessing it tastes fishy.

Cats, known to be picky eaters in the first place, and like people, they differ from one to another in things they like.
I have to admit even with my having cats for over twenty years myself, that yours eating fish food is a new one on me.
But, hey, cats rely on their sense of smell to eat and apparently there's something about the smell of the fish food you have that's drawing their appetite's.
Maybe it smells of fish? I know mine all like fish well enough.
Hey, people eat all kinds of odd things, right?
Take "escargot", popular as a French appertizer for instance,..
Icky, it's snails cooked and served in their shell with a fork to dig them out with and a butter and garlic sauce to dunk it in before you eat it.
Listen, if something like that don't kill you, I seriously doubt that your cats eating fish food is anything to worry about, if that's a concern.
