My lawn service advised me the only way to really rid yourself of sand spurs is to pull the "flowers"(seed heads while green) every couple of days. It seems to take forever but it does work. 10 Min's a day each growing season and they were gone by the middle of the second season(and my yard was about 1/2 sand spurs when I moved in). Now I just watch for more "Flowers" when in the yard in case any seeds were tracked in.P.S. Works faster if you have kids and can make a game of it.

This September, put out corn gluten in all areas where stickers
are present. This will keep them from germinating. You may have to reapply if it rains heavily.
