Dispute between large and small states in the constitutional convention. The small ones wanted equal representation, the larger wanted proportional to population size. The agreement to create two chambers was called the "Connecticut Compromise" because it was Roger Sherman, a delegate from Connecticut who came with the layout for the plan. Thuse the Senante has 2 members for each state and the House is "proportional" by population size.

Enough people have said each state gets 2 x 50 states =100. Article 1, Section 3 of the Constitution Of The United States says: The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators form each State, chosen by the Legislature thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one vote.
Article XVII of the amendments to the Constitution says: The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two Senators form each State, elected by the people thereof, for six Years; and each Senator shall have one vote.

It was a compromise so the big states and the little states would have equality. With out the Senate we wouldn't have a Constitution. I just took my political science final today.
