there are two ways.
I'll assume your right-handed. There is one way to explain it to you that is easy to understand.
It's called chordpro.
The strings on the guitar (6) are denoted by X's, and the frets played are noted by numbers. Thus, an A major would be (looking down)
X02220. Finger placement would be middle for the D string, ring finger for the G string, and pinky for the B string.
the X means mute it or don't strum that string.
0 means play it open.
A barr chord A major is 577655. the 5 is your index, the 7 on the A string is your ring finger, the 7 on the D string is your pinky, the 6 is your middle finger. This pattern of fingering can be slid up and down the frets to make other chords also.

Zeros are where you leave the strings open, numbers are which frets you hold the strings down at ... fat E string to the left, skinny E string to the right ... the basic way to play A Maj looks like this:
002220 ... the fat E string is optional, so you can play x02220
Which fingers to use? Whichever are most comfortable, really. Sometimes it depends on which chord you played before the Amaj, and which you're playing after - it can make the chord change easier to manage.
I play it different ways, depending on the situation... you still hold down those three strings at the second fret, but for finger order (again, from fattest string to thinnest string):
sometimes I hold the strings down using first, second and third fingers, in that order. Sometimes second, first and third. Sometimes second, third and fourth. And sometimes, even all three with the third finger laid across all three strings :)
Good luck and enjoy the guitar !

Place your fist three fingers on the 4th string, second fret; 3rd string, second fret and 2nd string, 2nd fret. Strum the first five strings (NB. The high E or the thinnest string is the first string. This is an open 'A' major chord
