Her family was from Germany. Anne was born in Frankfurt am Main. Her father left for Amsterdam in 1933 and the family joined him in 1934 to escape the spread of Naziism. The Nazis invaded The Netherlands in 1940. The family subsequently went into hiding in 1942.

So, I guess the correct answer is both. The family lived in Amsterdam for about 8 years before going into hiding there but originally came from Germany to escape the Nazis.

both, her family lived in Amsterdam before Holland was taken over. Then they went into hiding there. After they were caught (a thief turned them in) they were taken to concentration camps and all died (except for Otto Frank, Anne's father, who published her diary).

I wish I could remember. I met a man, a tailor in a nearby town here in Texas, who is a Holocaust survivor, and he met and knew her dad. He, the tailor, became a tailor only as a way to avoid execution by the Nazis. I have an original manuscript of a book he wanted to publish but couldn't, since he was not allowing any editing by the publishers. I think he finally got it edited by a German company. But, back to your question, I'd have to go get my book and look it up, and I'm too damn lazy to do so. God Bless you.
