Over the years, many mint marks have been used:
C for Charlotte, North Carolina
CC for Carson City, Nevada
D for Dahlonega, Georgia in the 1800s
D for Denver is the current usage
P for Philadelphia
S for San Francisco
W for West Point, New York
The letter P does not usually appear on coins. It was used on nickels during WWII when they had a 35% silver content.

If the penney (or any other American coin, for that matter) has a "D" on it then it was minted in Denver, Colorado.
Coins that have a "P" were minted in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
These markings are always found on the heads side of the coin, between the 3:00 and the 6:00 position
(as in clock).
It's imporant not to mix up the different coins if you are collecting them to put in coin books. You should have separate books for each collection, rather than mix them.
Satisfied? :)

D refers to the Denver Mint. If it had a P, it would be the Philadelphia Mint. Having no letter refers to the San Francisco Mint.
