I was wondering if there's anyone who could at least tell me what clinical trials means to them? It's a homework assignment and I just don't know what to define it as? Thank You!

Clinical trials are experiments using volunteers to test drugs effectiveness. They are monitored for safety as well...though safety is usually ascertained during nonclinical trials (they use lab animals for this). They have various designs depending on the endpoint...for example some endpoints are survival (cancer drug trials) while others are reducing infection completely or to some degree (antibiotics). Clinical trials are difficult to do because it is hard to get cooperation from volunteers and they are very expensive to run....go to the link below...there is a video and transcript where Bob Temple of the FDA is discussing some of the issues involved with Clinical trials....

it's an experiment/research involving patients. for example- a drug company has just created a new medicine called drug x. they need to prove to the fda (food & drug administration) that it not only works but that it is safe. the company may also be showing how one treatment regimen is better than another treatment regimen (i.e. as opposed to new drugs...it could just be a new combination of drugs or a different dose) they get consent from a group of people- one groups gets drug x and the other group gets a placebo or the leading treatment for that condition. there are 4 phases to getting a drug approved. clinical trials is just a general term to describe these type of experiments- (involves patients, and is needed for getting approval from a regulatory body like fda).

Every day, research uncovers new information about medical conditions and possible therapies. Your involvement in clinical research studies could help in the development of new medication for future use. You and many other people may benefit from your willingness to become involved. Volunteering to participate in a clinical drug study is one of the best ways you can contribute to the understanding of diseases that affect people and the development of new therapies. Volunteers are important to the clinical research study phase of the drug approval process. As a volunteer, you are the most critical link in a long chain of research and testing in the development of new medications for the future treatment of a broad range of health problems
