Should I not have asked an instructor that I've only had during a short summer session? I've gotten no response via email, do not have a number to get in contact with.

Well, you've sent it, so don't write it again. They will respond to it or not. I don't think you made a mistake, even if it was for a short session. Good luck, and don't worry. You're fine.

I don't see why a VL couldn't write a recommendation. In my experience, however, VLs can be difficult to get a hold of. Try to email her again, perhaps she was on vacation or her spam filter is a little too picky.

The best people to ask for a recommendation are those professors you've had the opportunity to talk to outside of class, and the more classes you've taken with them the better (although that's not always possible). It's also a good idea to send the prof. a copy of your resume and let them know of any aspects you want them to emphasize in the recommendation.
