I'm in the market right now & HD overpriced, underpowered dog-slow & hard to get what I want. Japanese sports bikes - I've ridden them for years. But they're a bit too specialised. I'm thinking about buying a Triumph Speed Triple :-)

If you got the bucks or the credit go with the Harley. They don't lose value like a Jap.Altho a lot of crotch rockets are made in the states now and a lot of that Harley's parts came from elsewhere.

Actually, I prefer standards. The sort of bike that has your feet straight under you, and your upper body upright to just slightly leaned forward. I find this the most comfortable riding position. It's not a crotch rocked and it's not a cruiser. Harley's got a few in their lineup - some Sportsters have rearset controls, and there's the Buell Blast and Lightning. But most Harleys have forward controls and a wide tank between your knees. I just don't find this very comfortable - although the crouched position of something like an R6 isn't my thing, either.
There's a lot to the world of motorcycles in between those two extremes.

Oh, yeth! I agree totally with totally hawt and fethtive dragon boy...get a nithe Honda! (primps, purses lips, fluffs hairdo) BULLS'HIT!!! Listen to that kind of rot and you'll totally miss the boat.
Here's how to decide: What kind of riding do you want to do? The two choices you've listed are mutually exclusive; completely counterfunctional to each other. Wanna cruise? HARLEY! Wanna burn concrete and assure a shorter lifespan? Crotch Rocket. Buy a Metric Cruiser and become a douchebag. And it's not about nationalism; plenty of Harley parts are manufactured in Japan, while plenty of Honda parts are manufactured here.
But most of all, don't listen to any of us. Make your own decision; you're the one who's gonna live with the fruits of that.

Dont get caught in this buy america stuff. Most of the steel companies are owned by foriegn companies anyway. I know that for a fact its my business. Anyway it depends how you like to ride. If you just want to cruise then get a Harley. If you like to take corners and like some speed then get a sport bike. Harleys are not ment for speed. You will put $30,000 into it to go fast in the quater mile but still cant corner like a sport bike. A sport bike is around 8 to 10 grand and is race ready right off the show room floor. Basically do you want to ride a cadilac or ride in a vette

Why spend all that cash on a slow, rattly, bad handling Harley, when you could buy a real Motorcycle for half the price ?????
Ducati - THAT's how you build a V-twin !!!

Harleydavidson makes overpriced juck for suckers stupid enough to pay for them. Buy a metric cruiser and start your own club. Call it the "I don't want to be a Harley wanna be" club.
