Bushy tails to squirrels have several advantages. 1, They are used to balance when jumping from branch to branch. 2, The tail is used to signal other squirrels that there is a danger . Like the approach of a cat. 3, The bushy tail makes the squirrel look much larger than what it actually is. 4, The tail acts as a decoy when the squirrel is fleeing from a predator. 5, And when the squirrel curls up in a little ball to rest, it makes a warm blanket. 6, It adds to a squirrels cuteness ! Everyone likes cute! A rat , with a skinny , naked tail is not cute ! So even though both squirrels and rats eat and live the same way. Rats get hammered and squirrels are pampered.

In my state (Michigan) I always figured if I saw a squirrel without a tail I figured they may have had a fox "remove" it, or some other accident. The one that lives around my house for the past few years doesn't have a tail any time of the year. He's a black squirrel, fat and already burying nuts in the yard for this winter.

There aren't squirrels that shed and regrow their tails. But, some squirrels don't have long, fluffy tails. Maybe you're just seeing different kinds in different seasons.

There is actually this group of people that go around and cut the tails of, then they eat them. They don't do it in the winter for some reason though. I was a part of that group for about two weeks, but the tail tasted funny, so I quit. You should try, you might just like it!

Because they aren't getting enough to eat so some of the fur falls out and makes the tail look very thin.
