Simple mathematical equation. Think of any combination and it all adds up to the numbers that are shown with that same symbol. It's not mathematically possible, using whole numbers, to get anything else.

Any 2 digit number can be written as the expression 10x + y, if x is the first digit and y is the 2nd digit.
The sum of the digits can be represented by the expression x + y.
Subtracting the sum from the 2 digit number gives the expression 10x + y - (x + y), which equals 9x.
9x is the same as 9 multiplied by x...which means every answer possible is a multiple of 9.
Now look at the multiples of 9 on that page...they are all the same symbol.
That's it!

when you add up your numbers they all become multiples of nine, they just throw the symbols in different places so you don't pick up the pattern but thats how they do it
1+1=2 11-2=9
1+2=3 12-3=9
