A series with cars that have carburetors, pump jacks for tire changing and refuels using an oversized gas can would never use anything remotely modern when it comes to technology. :-)

It's less expensive for the teams.

The teams have normally used Nitrogen rather than air in the tires because Nitrogen doesn't respond to humidity when it expands, but now they're using Argon. They know how much the pressure will increase with temperature, but the only way to reduce the hot pressure is to reduce the cold pressure, and that means using under-inflated tires which are more vulnerable to damage.

1. The rules say you can't.
2. The pit crew knows how much to inflate the tires in order they develop the correct tire pressure after the tires reach racing temperature.

They use nitrogen in the tires anyway which doesn't expand like normal air and is inert when it comes to fires/heat.
