I've just done some research on footbinding for a Question, and it was fascinating. There are lots of sites with pictures, and also living memories. It was a huge fashion thing which became part of China's culture for about a thousand years. Women were thought to be unattractive and unmarriageable unless they had tiny feet encased in beautiful slippers, so mothers made sure they bound up their small daughters' feet at a young age. The irony is that when it was finally outlawed, the pain of unbinding the feet caused so much pain that it seemed better to bind them up again. It might make an unusual topic.
