A pre-season football game, is pretty much a regular football game, but the outcome of the game doesn't reflect the standings of the teams quite yet. Also, it sort of warms up the teams for the regular season. I hope i helped.

They are like "practice" games where the coaches have a chance to evaluate their talent and decide whom to keep on the team and whom to let go. It also gives the veterans a chance to get into condition and to get some experience by playing in a game situation. All of the preseason games occur before the regular season and do not count in the standings.

As most people have accurately said, it is a one game (out of a four game preseason) where the coaches can evaluate their players - especially their younger players and not have to worry as much about winning or losing as they do abuot evaluating their tallent . But it is more than that.
1) The preseason games are a series of games for all of the players, primarily the younger players and players returning from injury, to face realistic game situations which they do not see in their camps.
2) The preseason games are a series of games for the coaches to see how well their players have learned their offensive or defensive schemes.
3) The preseason games are a series of games for coaches to evaluate players fighting for the same position and try to determine who will be their starters, who will be thier second or third stringers, who will be signed to their practice squads and who will be cut (or possibly traded). Many of these players will play well enough to make it to the next game and some will play poor enough where they are cut from the squad.
4) The preseason games are a series of games for the teams to experiment with new plays in the playbook to see how successful they might be in the regular season or, hopefully, the preseason.
The biggest arguement I have heard against the preseason is that it is two games too long. Most of the players are in game shape after 2 games and there is always the risk of major injury in preseason games. Last Saturday, the San Diego Chargers lost their kick-off/punt returner, Darren Sproles, for the season in a preseason game injury.

just a game before the season starts, also known as an exhibition game. pretty much practice or warm-up for the NFL teams' season, or regular season. also it is used to test out players if they are not sure how they will perform in a game. its exactly like a regular game it just isn't counted in the long-run on the record.

pre season football games are the 4 games before the "regular season" games (regular season games count towards the official records)

It is more like a scrimmage. Most of the starters won't play and if they do it will be for a very short while, but going to any kind of football game should be a blast if you enjoy it football!

Practice games before the real season starts.......Starters only play a small amount of time. Its a time for rookies and free agents to show their stuff to make the team...

It means that it is a practice game. That the result of the game dose not matter as far as who wins the game!
