well i think u should first find out if he likes you more than a friend so you wont get disappointed also you have to keep in mind that if you do go out things would never be the same for both of you meaning the friendship you once had.

You are friends already, so just tell him, what you think of him, it's not hard.
Then ask your Mom, what she thinks of him. I assume she has met him and knows him too.
These things always seem harder than they reallly are. You will be surprised how easy it is, once you have said it.
