Many people have said they are not anti-Semetic, just anti-Zionist. They do not believe Israel should have a state, or that they are excessive in defending it. They imply that Israel's existence is the cause of many problems and much violence in the world.
We can't take this premise to a laboratory to test it, but we can look at the past, before the establishment of the modern state of Israel.
Were Jews ever hated before then? Was it over their desire for a state, only?
Help me here. Thanks!

Yes and not even remotely.
The holocaust was the big one but there were countless Pogroms prior to that over religious reasons throughout Europe.

. the Jews have always had a hard time. Their first Temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 422 BC
The second Temple was destroyed by the Romans in 68 BC along with 2000000 killed captured or exiled.
The Crusaders had no worries killing them
In England Edward I expelled the Jews after borrowing there money
in the 1800s all of Europe was anti Semitic. there is evidence of this in Bram Stokers Dracula.
Every culture that has come into contact with the Jews have had problems. I don't know why.
Maybe it there ability to exploit niche markets on an international scale. Maybe its because of there strong sense of community or there strong moral and religious beliefs. Probably its because they are an easy scapegoat. And Humans love causing misery

The British started the Zionist movement 300 years ago in an attempt to bring about the second coming. [ Barbra Tutchman, Bible and the Sword, Pulitzer prize] In 1932 the KKK held an 80,000 man march in Washington DC, In medieval England Jews could not inherit, when they died the crown got their money so when the crown was broke, have a riot in the Jewish ghetto and boom more cash. A lot of the hate was about money. It was a sin for a Christian to lend money for interest that's where the Jews came in, and we all know how easy it is to hate bill collectors

If you actually read some history, then you would probably know that there have been anti-Semitism since Jews existed. There is historical evidence that Jews were always seen as a somewhat wierd group of people and that some random group of people always opposed this "wierdness" to the extreme. The Holocaust is only one of the most recent and most disastrous events to have occurred in relation to anti-Semitism.

Read "Foxes Book of Martyrs". In every book store. It's mostly about the Inquisition but there is a lot of general history in there about how Jews have been persecuted since they first brought to the world the concept of One God, and that was thousands of years ago.
What people mostly objected to was the idea that this One God demanded a certain threshold level of conduct from humans. Interfered with their Pride, which says IT is the supreme judge in the universe.

Jews have been hated and treated badly ever since Christianity became a major religion, because many Christians think that the Jews were responsible for the crusifuction of Jesus. In the middle ages many were killed for no reason at all.

Yes. Look at old newspaper want ads for jobs in the big cities around 1939 thru 41. You will see ads like help wanted. Jews, Blacks , and Dogs need not apply.
Yes good old America, they don't teach that in our schools.
See America was stolen from the Indians, and built on the backs of slaves. Nothing good comes from sin.

Throughout most of Latin European history, the Jews have been strongly disliked. (Latin as opposed to Arabic, as in Al Andaluz).
who would be brave enough to suggest why there was such a blanket distaste for this group of people that lasted for hundreds of years until modern times?

People are idiots. Jews have lived in the land of Israel continuously (that means without a single break) for more than 3000 years. If that land belongs to anyone, it's to the Jews.
The Jews have been hated since they were first a people. Everyone has taken their turn trying to stamp them out. No one has managed to do it, thanks only to God's faithfulness.

The Roman Empire was anti-semitic. A good example would be that whole Jesus story.
