The 3rd switch is usually put in for as an extra switch, so as if you want to add something to your bathroom, such as like one person said A Vanity Light or if you want to have an appliance you use in the bathroom, such as an electric razor, blow drier etc. to be turned off witout removing the plugin of it from the outlet, you can set it to have it wired to the extra switch & whalla. Usually electricians put these extr's in wall now, so people won't have to rewire their bathroom & any other room that a person buying a new house wants them installed.
They are also a way to save on electricial bills in larg. buildings, such as hotels etc.People will switch off something rather than unplugging & removing items from a wall outlet.****REBELCAT:~~~~

Maybe at one time the fan had a built-in light or heat lamp. If your bathroom has a shower or tub, perhaps the shower used to have a light fixture above it. I've known many people to encounter one of these "mystery switches" and they soon find out in controls half of a duplex outlet.

Maybe its a spare one that wasn't hooked up. does it do anything when the other switches are on? I don't know, but I found the same thing at my mates place the other day. maybe if you keep switching it you might end up getting a phone call by someone telling you to cut it out, stop flick my lights on and off!

In some bathrooms, there is a heat lamp in the ceiling which would be controlled by the third switch. You can check to see whether such a lamp, or a heater embedded in the ceiling fixture, is there. It is uncommon for a switch to be installed for no purpose.

It operates a GFI receptacle in the bathroom; this receptacle may or may not have a reset switch on it.
