Cingular and Verizon have the largest networks, and their plans cost nearly exactly the same. They both rate the highest for reception and dropped calls.
If you plan to travel to europe, your Verizon phone won't work there but your Cingular phone will. However- I've used my Verizon without a hitch in mexico and israel.

It depends on where in the country you are really, but all and all cingular and verizon come out pretty much the same. Unfortunately, there is not a perfect cell phone company.

cingular...not only is it the largest network in america but i never have had a problem finding service, and i travel a lot

Verizon. Hands down. thats why they cost more than the rest of their competition.
