I was removing the carpet and padding from my stairs to refinish them and was left with a black substance that looks like tar or some kind of glue. I have been sanding it off but it is taking forever! Anyone have any suggestions on getting this stuff off easier and quicker?

Try Goo Gone. I've seen it at Target & WalMart.

Unfortunately I asked my brother who lays carpet and tile and he said that you would have to sand it if your wanting to refinish it. He suggested getting an electric sander. Preferably a belt sander and some very course sand paper then use a fine sandpaper to smooth it off. The work will be so satisfying in the end.

you need to go to your local flooring store and get a flooring adhesive remover, it will be a ton of work no matter what you do but the end result will add value to your home

test a spot with Mineral Spirits and another with water, in using either solvent remember water is bad on oak floors and solvents are bad for you and flammable.

Mineral spirits or denatured alcohol should loosen it up some.
