Popular as in "well known"? They're all well known because they have done a lot of stuff, for a long period of time. Take Michael Jackson for example, his first number one hit was in the 60s and he still had number ones until the late 90s. And everyone listens to the radio and is well aquainted to his music. Same with Madonna. People like Jessica Simpson may be popular know, but she'll probably run out of hits soon and 20 years down the road be playing at a high school auditorium for a $5 entry...harsh but true.

because they became such massive icons and did good stuff, and even bad stuff they have done, like jackson and the children thing and clinton and monica, are not big enough to make them unpopular, ever.

You seem to be confusing "popular" with "well-known". I do not count Madonna, MJ, or Clinton as "popular" or even "well_known" now that I think about it. Those, I count as notorious.
