Pick a song to showcase your voice. If you have an Alto voice, performing a song with a high range will be detrimental to both your voicebox and your audition.
Performing a song means putting into the song 'what it needs' not just 'putting your all' into it. If you watch American Idol, you will see that many times the judges will say that the song was "over sung" or that the singer sounded like they were "screaming" the song. When you're singing the song, you want to be feeling like your working, but the feeling should be in your abdomen, not in your throat. If you feel like you have to cough (or go "ahem" to clear your voice) while you're singing, this is an indication of 'oversinging' a song.
Do'nt sing a song like the original performer. This is nice and it sounds good, but you're just being a copycat. Find something about the performance where you can add your own 'interpretation' of the song itself. DON'T and I mean DO NOT add embellishments and runs unless you can do so clearly and it's part of the performance. A ballad which relys on it's melody is killed by such things. Something with more heart, which is more gospel like will be better off with the trills and runs.
Lastly, I will say that 'most' friends will say what they think you want to hear. "Oh you sing good!" or "Wow. You're so professional!" Consider the source. How many times have we all seen the auditioners at American Idol say the exact same things. And when they go to audition, you want to laugh at them. More exactly, you want to laugh at the friends who told these people they had talent. You want a good critique? Go to your school's singing teacher and sing for them A Capella (No accompanyment.) A good singing teacher will be honest AND offer some good advice about your technique, your song and your true talent.

Don't ever try to sing songs by icons because you will always be compared to them, whether it is intentional or not. If you have to do that, go back a couple of decades.

depends completely upon the audience.
If it's a crowd of elderly church-goers, try avoiding things like rap or screamo
if it's a crowd of gothic children, try avoiding things like spanish children songs...
