I am just begining to play the drums and am attempting to self teach myself. I am curious about the benifits to buying an acoustic drum kit or an electric. I would probably be buying the cheapest of each, so keep that in mind. And where would you buy each?

Would be best to go acoustic first. Realize that electric drums are really intended as substitutes and replacements for acoustics (for a variety of reasons - easier to amplify, more controllable volume, etc.) and as such touch and playability is severely constrained compared to acoustics.

I don't know a drummer (I'm a professional musician) who has both who doesn't prefer playing acoustic if possible.

If you're just starting, the place to start is actually by identifying a good instructor who can clearly tell you how he teaches, what his method is, what you'll be learning first, and all those sorts of things.

I would suggest buying a used set locally, if at all possible, for the best bang for your buck.

And practice, practice, practice.

acoustic- i had an electric one for a while, and they suck. don't worry about being loud and annoying. if it pisses people around you off, then f*ck em (this is a good attitude for a drummer to have)

also, playing an electric kit is just as annoying, even if you're using headphones, because the pads are loud. also, there are lots of things you can do on an acoustic kit that you can't do on a cheap electric kit.

try ebay, or craigs list and find someone in your area, so you don'
t have to have it shipped

i'm prepared on an acoustic equipment because you are able to bodily control the drums to get the sound you like. That makes the equipment unique. no person else's equipment will sound like yours. additionally there is not any assessment with the sound. you need to use dynamics greater with acoustic kits. in spite of this, digital kits are greater transportable, simpler to checklist, and if quantity is a element, you are able to flow loopy on an digital equipment with out increasing the quantity.
