Because it is an approximation, in English, of a word that was created in a language that does not use the Roman alphabet.

To give you an idea:

The names, Wong, Wang, Hong, Hoang, Wan and several others have the same root, but none of thos name originated in a language using our alphabet, but rather, in one where the entire name is written with a single syllable.

So, what is the proper pronounciation and spelling of that single syllable?

the way Baghdad is pronounced in Arabic is different, the gh represent an Arabic letter that is pronounced like the french R letter,

Because it has. I was there for a year and I almost had my socks blown off. The Iraqi people are lovely... 99% of the people really want peace. Well originally it had an S an I and a T in it too. Then someone decided to bomb the **** out of it and almost succeeded!

Because it is pronounced "BaghGHGHGdad" but it would look stupid to spell it that way so just one "H" does the work of all the other "hghghghghhg".
