my dad says that i can't get an abbreviated schedule for school because then social security wont give me my check. (by the way my mom passed away when i was 13 ... so i've been getting social security. i'm 17 now) i just think that my dad doesnt want me home from school earlier than i have too. if this is false i want to know so i can get an abbreviated schedule, because this is my senior year and i dont want to work harder than i have to. i want to drop pre-cal and spanish 3.

Social Security Survivor benefits are payed until you are 18 or 19 if you are still in high school. I believe from what you say you will still be able to collect the checks for one more year but the best way to be sure is call the 1-800 number and ask. I have been dealing with them since my husband died 2 months ago and they are very helpful.

Try asking your counselor or an official at the school or go straight to the source and call up the social security office.

In order to receive a survivors check as a minor, you have to be in school full-time. That requires verification by the institution you are attending, so if they will certify you are full time without those classes, you get your check. But if you're that lazy that you can't go to school all day (poor oppressed baby!) I suspect you will be receiving government checks for some time... along with government cheese and free maternity services.

Get all the education you can get. Dad would love to have you home, he is just looking out for your best interest. That is what they do.
