Many do and in fact most native Americans do assimilate into the US culture. However a few prefer to preserve their heritage, culture and language, out of a pride of their ancestors.

Although, there are a large number that seem to have accepted the Anglo culture; there are those that try to hang on to old ways (traditions, language, culture) because that is part of who we are and how we identify ourselves. Why should they buy into a culture (meaning Anglo) that is like a virus - all consuming and values based on materialism.

Ok while it is clear that your question was misinterpreted by most who read it - I guess I disagree with your assumption..however...I am Canadian and live in an area with a most massive Indo-Canadian Community and they have "assimilated" just fine and they retain their own beautiful culture and share it with their neighbours who are Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Japanese, Vietnamese, Thai, German, Italian, Polish, French, any number of other European countries and oh yeah their fellow Canadians.

Sorry to hear they don't feel like fitting in south of the 49th...wonder if anyone tried to make them feel welcome??????

well beside the obvious eradication of their culture and some resentment to western society, there is I believe a stipulation about keeping pure lineage in tribes. I have heard that some native Americans try to reproduce with their own, not incest but within tribes to keep the bloodline going. Also our culture is a mix of many backgrounds, so in a way they are part of our culture via cultural diffusion and social interaction. We have a free market economy and they use it to their advantage with casinos thanks to reservation laws. Is money not one of the biggest factors in the American dream and all that b.s.

Native Americans almost lost their culture altogether. They were thisclose to being annihilated, forget assimilated! It's completely understandable that they'd want to keep their traditions alive. If I were one of the last Ukrainians on earth, I wouldn't stop making perogies and paska because no one else was doing it!

Because they shouldn't have to.

Their culture is not more or less important than anyone elses. Like everyone born in the United States of America they should have the freedom to be who they want to be, not who you want them to be.

Your suposed to assimilate into their culture you idiot. Its their land and you lot stole it.
Guess what? They dont have to do a damn thing. Look at your excuse for a society and then look at theirs.
